Australia versus the UK - Is Australia really the answer?

A nice blog entry with some useful stats just came up on my radar: Australia versus the UK - Is Australia really the answer?

Becoming an accountant

The Graduate Certificate of Chartered Accounting Foundations : available from Deakin University as a part-time distance course covering the core accounting knowledge areas is one of the options to qualify the ICAA requirements for entry into the program and for migration assessment purposes. I emailed the ICAA asking if the post-graduate course would satisfy their requirements and they said it would. Rather than studying an Australian undergraduate accounting degree program, I can add to my existing qualifications with the one-year post-graduate certificate. While I would prefer qualifying CIMA as my niche qualification, this will take more time, resources and is only partially recognized. The program seems good enough to get into Australia and the accounting profession. Once you qualify the CA foundations, you need six months work experience to gain entry followed by practical work experience of at least three years to gain full membership. During this time you will complete the five ...

Which accounting body to approach for assessment?

Of the three accounting bodies, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) seems like the most reasonable program. All of the job posts I came across for accounting professionals also don’t distinguish between CPA and CA, while NA was not specifically mentioned. While the CPA program seems to have more stringent entry requirements (requiring coverage of all 12 core knowledge areas plus three additional units) and a more academically oriented program from the outset, it is only recognized in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. On the other hand, the ICAA is a member of the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) bringing together the nine pre-eminent professional accounting member bodies in Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland, Hong Kong and England & Wales. The GAA represents over 700,000 of t...

How to get there?

I don’t want any backdoors and windows. I want to come in with the right credentials to earn some respect and some dough from day one so I can settle in comfortable with my family. The best way to do that is, of course, to bring in lots of money and investment. For business or for Australia’s star export: education. Just one problem – I just got enough money for a decent living at home in Karachi, Pakistan. So the next best way’s to get a decent job (and discover the life). I’m just short of the points and you never know when that’s going to be upped. So I need to qualify for a occupation in demand. These MODL occupations add 25 points or so more in several categories for immigration. And what’s more important – in times when people (read, migrants) around the world are seriously complaining about how bad the situation is and there are no jobs – there are hundreds of vacancies for people like you. Australia needs you, so you don’t have to wash up on their shores and just hope they’ll ...
