Digital Analyst Career Essentials - Google Analytics Certification
Okay, so you've used web tools and metrics to make decisions. Why not get certified? It's free and helps you with your goals, be it marketability or simply gaining confidence you know your way around digital.
If you're not already familiar with web analytics, it is probably the best known universe where big data and intuitive browser based GUI tools come together.
While you would expect it easy to find the right link to get certified, this is probably the only OFFICIAL link you need to point your browser: https://academy.exceedlms.com/student/path/2938
There are links from there to access the preparation course materials with all the information you need to know, nothing more. In true Google style, there's a lot of whitespace.
If you still don't believe me, then you can get the same information from the horse's mouth: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/3424288?hl=en
The exam isn't hard and comprises mainly multiple choice questions or T/F with only one correct answer, and some of the questions are blatantly obvious. You have to wait a day before attempting the test again, previously it used to be a week.
It's easy to think there might be a trick question in there but I found most of the questions quite straightforward although some logical reasoning may be required.
Best to be relaxed during the exam so you can understand the question and answer correctly as there's plenty of time if you have a basic competency in GA. So grab a snack, get some coffee before your attempt and keep distractions out of the way.
For the most part, know your way well around the basics and definitions around dimensions, metrics, scope, parameters, source/ medium, various assets (i.e. Custom Segments, Goals, Custom Channel Groupings, Custom Attribution Models, and Custom Reports).
An understanding of how and what you need to do for GA to collect hit data in sessions, interactions and across domains/ devices is crucial (e.g. protocols, cookies etc.) as is your understanding of navigation through the various stock reports and hierarchies as well as your ability to work with filters.
Also useful to understand how Google Analytics and Google Ads work together and how you can use GA for remarketing. A code level understanding of regex and tagging is not required beyond the very basics.
Probably best to keep a browser window open to google up some of the answers (put "in google analytics" at the end of your search string or simply copy the question string if it's straightforward enough). Have another browser window with the demo account so you can quickly verify your answers to what/ where questions during the test (hopefully you should be familiar enough with the reports so the answers are pretty obvious).
It's also a great idea to copy paste the questions you find tricky into a notepad for review later. I scored 77% on my first attempt in about half an hour without making too much of an effort and the copy of the test helped me analyze my answers.
If you're in the mood to enrich your understanding of web analytics a bit further with GA, Google Academy offers some additional courses. Depending on what your goals are, don't waste your time on any other links with 'hundreds of practice tests' as it's more than likely they are obsolete and a great way to procrastinate as the content keeps changing.
Good luck!

Keep in mind:
- You'll need a score of 80% or higher to pass
- If you end the assessment early or the timer runs out before you've answered enough questions correctly, you won't pass
