Don't Say Cheese

So when you go in to the studio to get your photo taken for the Australian visa (health requirements), don't be too surprised when no one really has any clear list of requirements. The health center staff themselves usually present conflicting information and the studio guys are just playing it by ear.

The only official requirements I could find were found in the health center building in a detailed poster. For all of you frantically googling "Australia visa photo" or "Immigration photo requirements for Australia" and such, this blog post should tell you everything you need to know, since I took down some quick notes when no one was looking. Yes, and that includes you, Mr. Studio Guy.

First off, the most important guidelines are that the photograph should have a plain white background and clearly show your face straight on. There are some things to watch out for that might result in your photo being rejected so watch out for these as well:

  1. The pose should not be too far or too close. The studio guys will know.
  2. Avoid accessories such as scarf around the neck or sunglasses
  3. Hair should not cover the face or droop over the shoulders
  4. Religious headwear is allowed but should not cover the forehead or face
  5. Expression should be neutral. However, a Mona Lisa smile generally goes through (no smirking, laughing, frowning and funny faces please)
  6. Best take off your glasses to avoid reflection and glare
  7. Not over- or under-exposed (the photograph, not you silly)
  8. There should not be any shadowing

The poster in the health center had nice examples to illustrate each point, but I could find it on the web. About the closest guidelines I found were on this page, though these are by no means an official set of requirements for immigration or medical procedures.
